Scholarships
Graduates
of a Scottish University holding a degree with first-class honours
in any subject and intending to pursue three years of postgraduate
research for a PhD degree can be considered for the award of
a Carnegie Scholarship. Applications for such Scholarships,
which are intended to be the premier award in Scotland, greatly
outnumber the number of Scholarships available. Students in
their final year who are expected to achieve first-class honours
may apply, withdrawing if they fail to do so. Scholarships,
which can be held at any University in the United Kingdom, but
usually in Scotland, provide fees, maintenance and a research
and travel allowance. Scholars are also eligible to apply for
Carnegie Research Grants and are sympathetically treated. Applicants,
who must be nominated by a member of academic staff, must submit
their applications, electronically followed by a signed hard copy, by 15th March to be considered
for an award for the following session.
The
Trust also administers Scholarships funded by the Caledonian
Research Foundation, which are held under identical conditions
save that the Scholarship must be held in Scotland.
