Fee Assistance
Students accepted for, or attending, a first degree course at a Scottish university, and who were born in Scotland or who have a parent born in Scotland or who have at least two years of secondary education in Scotland, and whose fees are not being paid by any other body, may apply for assistance with tuition fees. No help can be provided with maintenance of other costs involved with attendance at a university. To be eligible, students must also demonstrate that they would suffer hardship if assistance was not given. Applicants must satisfy the Trustees that they could support themselves, or be supported, if assistance was given. Assistance will not be given with fees for Open University courses, access courses, sub-degree courses, Higher National Certificates/Diplomas, or postgraduate study. Applications, on a form which is available online, must be returned in signed hard copy, and will be considered between April 1st and October 1st for assistance with fees for the coming academic year.
University Expeditions (Undergraduate)
The Trust will consider applications for a grant towards the cost of an expedition approved and supported by a Scottish University. The expedition, which must bear the name of the university and comprise at least five undergraduates from that university, must have as its purpose the training of undergraduates in research techniques through the discovery of new knowledge. The expedition must have a coherent research programme and must be accompanied throughout by a member of staff or someone of equal standing acceptable to the Trust. Applications, on a form which is available online, must be returned in signed hard copy, by 15th January, accompanied, if possible, by an expedition brochure. The Trust will not consider applications from individuals for support outwith an approved University expedition.
Undergraduate Vacation Scholarships
Undergraduates attending a Scottish University, who were born in Scotland or who have a parent born in Scotland or who have at least two years of secondary education in Scotland, may be considered for the award of a Vacation Scholarship for the pursuit of a full-time research project, usually in the vacation between their second and third year. Vacation Scholarships cannot be used for attendance at conferences. Candidates can only be considered on the nomination of Deans, or equivalent officers, who are asked to rank in order of merit all applicants from their Faculty. Scholarships are given for maintenance of up a maximum of eight weeks, whether based at home, elsewhere in the United Kingdom, or abroad. Nominees can come from any Faculty and nominations by Deans must be received by 1st April. Nominations are made by each Scottish university and candidates wishing to be considered for one of these awards should approach their own university for an application form. Applications can only be accepted via University Faculties.
